Working as a Traveler on a Work Holiday Visa in Australia

0Shares

Aside from being one of the most popular destinations for backpackers from all over the world, Australia is also famous for its fantastic minimum wage. As of now, the Australian national minimum wage is 18.93 AUD per hour, or 719.20 AUD per week. Compared to so many developed countries out there, this is pretty awesome. That’s why many people rave on about the Australian minimum wage. With that said, finding work in the land down under is not as easy as you might think when you make that impulsivity-fueled decision of going on a work and holiday in Oz perhaps way too soon. What are the things you should consider?

The types of jobs available will highly depend on where you stay

This is something that is pretty obvious and for this purpose, you need to have at least a rough plan on how you’re going to spend your time in Australia. What do you want to do? What areas would you like to visit? You don’t have to have them down exactly in order at the start. Simply write down what you have in mind as a form of brainstorming. Then you can work it out from there.

Taking a consideration getting a second year visa

If you’re eligible, getting a second year work and holiday visa may be in one of your to-do lists. It’s a huge thing for your travel plan that you need to get it fulfilled. So your types of job that you’d need to apply to should meet the criteria of the specified work.

First off, you need to be aware whether you’re on a visa subclass 417 or subclass 462. If you’re from the UK, Ireland, or Japan, for example, then you’ll be on a 417 visa. If you’re from the United States, Vietnam, or Indonesia, among other listed countries, then you’re on a 462 subclass. This division is important to note because what can count as a specified work for a requirement for a second year visa for each subclass is different.

Planning your work and travel in the land down under

Without any plan, your work and holiday opportunity would be more difficult to navigate. Do your planning based on the brainstorming process you’ve done beforehand. If you’re planning on getting that second year visa, then it may be best for you to start your year-long holiday traveling to the areas that meet the visa requirement. Then plan on applying for jobs around that trip. That way, you can tick off one major thing you’ve planned on doing from the start anyway.

There is no need to plan every single detail of the month on what you’re planning to do during your whole year. The best way to plan, for many people, is having the large picture of what they’re going to do. From that idea, you can work out the details. Whether you’re planning on exploring the outbacks or jumping from city center to city center, having some sort of a plan is going to help you big time in the long run.
