Boiling Lake, Dominica

The name itself already explains of how dangerous this lake is. It might look like a comfortable hot tub but don’t dare jump into it. The lake is 200 feet across and 35 feet deep filled with boiling water. Dive, and you will be in different world in few minutes. The truth is, the boiling water is only at the center but the water neared the shores can reach 190 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Jellyfish Lake, Palau

The name sounds cute that you feel like you want to dive in and befriend all the jellyfish. This 1,500 feet long lake is 12,000 year old and cut off from the sea. It is free from predators and only houses millions jellyfish that reproduce at amazing rate. The jellyfish living in this lake have almost completely lost their sting. Hence, The Jellyfish Lake is safe place for snorkelling. 

Lake Baikal, Siberia

Lake Baikal is 5,387 feet deep and around 30 million years old. It’s in fact the oldest and deepest lake in the world,. while contained around 20 percent of the world’s unfrozen freshwater. This lake turns into a beautiful aquamarine color after the ice has cleared in early spring. In the summer, it turns into bright green color. If you want to experience the most atmospheric vibe of this lake, pay a visit in winter and brace the cold.

Lake Hillier, Australia

This lake is very unique because it has bubblegum pink waters. Located on Middle Island, off the South Coast of Western Australia, the water doesn’t lose color even if you take it out of the lake. The water is said to be 10 times saltier than ocean water. The pink color of the water is affected by the salt-loving bacteria, not algae just like what was speculated before. 

Kelimutu, Indonesia

Located on top of volcano Kelimutu, the three lakes change in colors. Even the scientists are baffled since the lakes seem to spontaneously change their colors. It is thought to be a reaction to volcanic activity but no one can really explain why it happens that way. The lakes can have red, green, blue, white, and even black color. The locals believe that ‘spirits’ are who responsible for the color changes.
